A condiment of Fall
Brooklyn New York’s quintet, Dirty Projectors, released their latest work, Super João, a four-track EP bringing down to earth chill tunes befitting the winter solstice. Driven by their consistent member and founder, David Longstreth, the group has experienced constant lineup changes throughout its life-hood with Longstreth being its continuous pool of inspiration and motivation for its collection of eight studio albums and a plethora of singles and EP’s.
Apart from a five-part series and re-imagining, Super João is but one EP before the release of Dirty Projectors upcoming LP featuring all in one for this year including: Window Open and Flight Tower with two more yet to be released. Each EP will feature one member guiding the lead vocals, (Longstreth, Mike Daniel Johnson, Maia Friedman, Felicia Douglas and Kristen Slipp), each bringing their own unique style their overall sound.
Focusing back to Super João, the EP is lead sung by Longstreth this time beginning the somber symphonic acoustic strums of “Holy Mackerel,” bringing a melancholic mood of tone to the table perfectly acquainted to setting autumn sunsets and sips of pumpkin spice.
Grab a cardigan and lay one’s head in the dry grass of the nearest park and watch the leaves turn color with the changing of the seasons alongside “I Get Carried Away.” This song is filled with cheerful, sleepy melodies that beckons relaxation.
“You Create Yourself” hits third in track lineup with a complimentary melody to “I Get Carried Away,” with its chilling and tranquil soft guitar strums that need only be enjoyed by staring out the window into the fog of rainfall to accommodate for its decompressing tone. Concluding the EP, “Moon, If Ever” features a notch down acoustics and a pinch more keyboard that would be found in similar artists like Diners or Deerhunter, offering a placid ending to an enriching EP.
Music is subjective to every listener as every track of every artist can be used to express a feel or compliment a feeling or sensation. Super João is certainly complimentary or relatable to the current weather changes as people begin to enter the autumn season and provides an alleviating sensation to go hand in hand with.
