Fu Manchu @ The Bottom Lounge (3/27)

From the heart of the deep heat in Southern California that produced the pioneers of stoner rock, Fu Manchu is coming to Chicago. Fu Manchu is regarded as one of the most influential and founding bands of the stoner rock genre and was huge in the Palm Desert scene. Fu Manchu is able to take high-intensity thrashing, and somehow make it melodic, contemplative, and just plain cool. The band is headed by lead guitarist and vocalist, who is the only consistent member through it’s shifting cast. What has always remained consistent however, is Fu Manch’s delivery of its innovative sound, and spectacular live performances.

Fu Manchu first went under the name of Virulence when formed in 1985. After some line-up changes, they arrived at Fu Manchu and released their debut album No One Rides for Free in 1994. Their fourth album The Action Is Go saw critical success and is an important album to stoner rock. Their sixth and seventh album King Of the Road and California Crossing build on their further upon their sound and brought their popularity to greater heights. In the 2010’s they remained active, releasing Gigantoid in 2014 and their most recent album Clone of the Universe in 2018.

Fu Manchu’s influence reaches farther than just stoner rock. They had an effect on all music to come, as well as American culture. Be sure to see them live next year!

MacGregor Salmon: Transfer student from Texas A&M to Loyola University Chicago, I am a Film and Digital Media major. Though my primary study is in film, I love all things creative and want to immerse myself in all kinds of mediums. Sharing and discovering music with others has always been an important part of my relationships with others. I grew up on funk, and the first song I can remember hearing is Sir Duke by Stevie Wonder. I still have much love for funk, but I also lean towards alternative, jazz, and anything experimental as I love to hear how new artists are changing the music scene. I find myself on Soundcloud often, looking for creative new works by independent artists. I also consider myself to be a writer, I love to write creative short stories, but I also want to use my skills as a writer to further my appreciation and understanding of music, and the artists behind their work.
