Hot Mulligan @ The Bottom Lounge (12/6)

A group of midwestern guys from Lansing, Michigan, dealing with the trials and realizations that come in young adulthood; Hot Mulligan is a half pop, half emo blend of guitar riffs and vocal lamentations. Leader singers Tades Sanville and Chris Freeman make use of the entire range of their voice, from soft mutters to passionate screaming at the top of their lungs. The subjects of Hot Mulligan’s lyrics tend to be quirky on one end, depressing on another, and an ample use of dark humor as the third position. All of this Hot Mulligan’s clever tactics in order to get you to jam, dance, and rock out.

Hot Mulligan first formed in 2014 in Michigan, with their first EP release Fenton, followed by Honest and Cunning in 2015, and Opportunities in 2016. In 2018, Hot Mulligan released their first studio album, Pilot where they first went full into their cross between emo and pop-punk. Their newest album, You’ll Be Fine was released this year and grapples with the dread of slowly slipping out of your 20s into your 30s. You’ll Be Fine also contains their single *Equip Sunglasses* which takes a wacky look at the uncomfortable feeling of being watched.

Hot Mulligan is reminiscent of pop-punk emo bands we got in the 2000s, while still keeping things fresh, be sure to see them live at the end of the year.

MacGregor Salmon: Transfer student from Texas A&M to Loyola University Chicago, I am a Film and Digital Media major. Though my primary study is in film, I love all things creative and want to immerse myself in all kinds of mediums. Sharing and discovering music with others has always been an important part of my relationships with others. I grew up on funk, and the first song I can remember hearing is Sir Duke by Stevie Wonder. I still have much love for funk, but I also lean towards alternative, jazz, and anything experimental as I love to hear how new artists are changing the music scene. I find myself on Soundcloud often, looking for creative new works by independent artists. I also consider myself to be a writer, I love to write creative short stories, but I also want to use my skills as a writer to further my appreciation and understanding of music, and the artists behind their work.
