‘Jump On It’, Catch Sir Mix-a-Lot at SAP Center on 4/9/21

Anthony L. Ray, better known as Sir Mix-a-Lot is a popular American singer-songwriter, rapper, and producer. Born and raised in the suburbs of Seattle, Sir Mix-a-Lot was a lover of rap starting from an early age, beginning to rap by the time he entered his early twenties. While being one of the children the Seattle Public School District bused to integrate predominantly white and more affluent schools, Sir Mix-a-Lot was influenced by his experiences as a minority in a school that clearly did not value his presence. But it was also at one of these schools that a music teacher would play a pivotal role in his love for music, leading to his eventual success in the field. He first began by DJing local parties and then moving on to rapping himself before finding initial success with his release, “Posse on Broadway”. Sir Mix-a-Lot’s debut album, Swass, was later released in 1998.

However, it wasn’t until he released his hit single, “Baby Got Back” in 1992, a song that reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, that Sir Mix-a-Lot finally got the recognition he deserved. It also went on to win a Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance. Most recently, however, Sir Mix-a-Lot has stayed local, hosting a morning radio show in Seattle as well as remaining a mainstay on the festival circuit in the US, performing for many smaller festivals. Most notable, however, Sir Mix-a-Lot will be coming to the Bay Area’s SAP Center to perform alongside Lisa Lisa, Montell Jordan, Expose, and other artists. Be sure to catch them there and continue to follow MXDWN for all your music updates.
