Jojo @ The Vic (5/10)

From an early age, it was evident that Jojo had an exceptional amount of talent for her age. Growing up singing the songs of Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey, singing had just become a part of Jojo’s lifestyle. By 13, she was already signing with record labels and releasing hits, continued to do so in adulthood, and on top of that pursued acting as well. Jojo’s style alternates between acoustic pop and R&B, having a voice that can perfect both styles in a powerful soprano. Now, after winning a 10 year-long legal battle with her previous label, Jojo is unrestricted and unbounded in her creative freedom and musical ownership.

Jojo had been recognized for her prodigious talent as early as the age of 6, and by 13 was signed to a label to produce her self-titled debut album, which contained massive hit Leave (Get Out),  and topped charts. Her next album, The High Road rose to top 5 on Billboard and contained her single Too Little Too Late which became certified platinum. During disputes with her label, she released two mixtapes, Can’t Take That Away from Me and Agape. After winning her dispute, she signed on to Atlantic Records and released her third album Mad Love in 2016. Her most recent album came out this year and is titled Good to Know.

Jojo’s talents have been honed and recognized her entire life, and as she has gotten older she has been able to express herself more freely. Be sure to see Jojo live next year!

MacGregor Salmon: Transfer student from Texas A&M to Loyola University Chicago, I am a Film and Digital Media major. Though my primary study is in film, I love all things creative and want to immerse myself in all kinds of mediums. Sharing and discovering music with others has always been an important part of my relationships with others. I grew up on funk, and the first song I can remember hearing is Sir Duke by Stevie Wonder. I still have much love for funk, but I also lean towards alternative, jazz, and anything experimental as I love to hear how new artists are changing the music scene. I find myself on Soundcloud often, looking for creative new works by independent artists. I also consider myself to be a writer, I love to write creative short stories, but I also want to use my skills as a writer to further my appreciation and understanding of music, and the artists behind their work.
