Strfkr and The Undercover Dream Lovers @ Thalia Hall (2/9)

Strfkr and Undercover Dream Lover are teaming up to give you a show both groovy and dreamy. Portland-based Strfkr began as the solo project of Joshua Hodges, with the idea of members of the band not taking themselves too seriously, and devoting themselves to the art, and not just the direction a label wanted to go. They started playing at local house parties and other similar venues to seek creative freedom. Strfkr started with their debut album, at the time self-titled, Starfucker in 2007 with laid back pop and electronic beats. Their third album released 2011, Reptilians moves away from the laid back feel a bit and includes lyrics discussing death and the end of the world, masked by an upbeat optimistic pop style. Their 6th and most recent album Future Past Life was released this year.

The Undercover Dream Lovers is the moniker of musician Matt Koenig, who produces, writes, plays, and sings in a lovely falsetto. His music airs a funky feeling with chord progressions on keyboard, guitar, and more merging synth melodies with a grooving baseline. Koenig has produced many singles and EPs, beginning with his single The Way You Look ft. Rivka Rose, and just 6 days later his first EP While It’s In Style. His next EP In Real Time features his single Feelin’ Left Out and was entirely recorded in his bedroom. His debut LP, It’s All In Your Head features 11 tracks and came out February this year.

Both Strfkr and The Undercover Dream Lover are dedicated to providing an authentic experience, and some great jams to dance to.

MacGregor Salmon: Transfer student from Texas A&M to Loyola University Chicago, I am a Film and Digital Media major. Though my primary study is in film, I love all things creative and want to immerse myself in all kinds of mediums. Sharing and discovering music with others has always been an important part of my relationships with others. I grew up on funk, and the first song I can remember hearing is Sir Duke by Stevie Wonder. I still have much love for funk, but I also lean towards alternative, jazz, and anything experimental as I love to hear how new artists are changing the music scene. I find myself on Soundcloud often, looking for creative new works by independent artists. I also consider myself to be a writer, I love to write creative short stories, but I also want to use my skills as a writer to further my appreciation and understanding of music, and the artists behind their work.
