Indie pop duo, Tennis provides an ethereal slow dance sound paired with foxy confidence. The duo is husband and wife pair, Alaina Moore, who provides vocals, and Patrick Riley, who helms keyboard and guitar. The pair felt inspired to write music after taking a sailing trip down the Eastern Atlantic, and their sound reflects a calm ocean that gently rocks back and forth. The band pulls off a 70s visual aesthetic frankly like no other but also takes sonic inspiration from 50s love pop, and a hint of gospel. They manage to keep everything fresh with their lo-fi style that feels like innovation and a love letter.
After their college graduation and first sailing trip, the band returned to land to release their debut album, Cape Dory in 2011. The following year they released their sophomore album Young & Old. Their third album, Ritual in Repeat gained much critical acclaim for its innovation in revising 70s pop. In 2016 they went on another sailing trip, this time in the Pacific, and returned to produce their next album, Yours Conditionally, under their own record production company, Mutually Detrimental. Their latest album, Swimmers, was released just this year.
Tennis takes inspiration from the past to vocalize a new romantic sound. Be sure to hear the duo perform live next year.
