Purity Ring @ The Riviera Theatre (5/3)

Using dark ambient synthpop, paired with lyrics equally as dark and ominous, Purity Ring is made up of Megan James on vocals and Corin Roddick as instrumentals and production. The Canadian band began in 2010 when Roddick began to experiment with electronic production and asked James to provide vocals. Purity Ring incorporates synthpop, dream pop, trip-hop, and witch house. James’s light voice contrasts with the macabre nature of her lyrics and the beats, creating a full range of sound. For performances, both wear outfits created by James, and Roddick uses a custom glowing tree-like soundboard to provide an aesthetic to their sound.

Purity Ring began when Roddick asked James to perform on a track titled Ungirthed in 2011, thus forming their partnership. Afterwhich they released a new official single in 2012 titled Obedear. They then released their debut album Shrines, which was recorded separately in there own homes after Roddick would send James a beat. Their next album, Another Eternity, came out in 2015, featuring their singles, Begin Again, Bodyache, and Repetition. In April of this year, they released their newest album, Womb, which grapples with themes of control in a world that is so chaotic.

Purity Ring innovates in electronica, supported by Megan James’s amazing songwriting and vocals.

MacGregor Salmon: Transfer student from Texas A&M to Loyola University Chicago, I am a Film and Digital Media major. Though my primary study is in film, I love all things creative and want to immerse myself in all kinds of mediums. Sharing and discovering music with others has always been an important part of my relationships with others. I grew up on funk, and the first song I can remember hearing is Sir Duke by Stevie Wonder. I still have much love for funk, but I also lean towards alternative, jazz, and anything experimental as I love to hear how new artists are changing the music scene. I find myself on Soundcloud often, looking for creative new works by independent artists. I also consider myself to be a writer, I love to write creative short stories, but I also want to use my skills as a writer to further my appreciation and understanding of music, and the artists behind their work.
