Owen @ The Sleeping Village (11/6)

Confessional lyrics, expert use of an acoustic guitar, and a bare-bones approach to production, Owen is the solo musical project of Mike Kinsella. Kinsella has been a major part of the Chicago indie rock scene, participating in several bands such as American Football, Joan of Arc, Cap N’ Jazz, and more. With much experience in several stylistically different bands, Owen combines elements of Kinsella’s musical experience, combing melodic progression, with experimentation. For half of Owen’s existence, Kinsella recorded within his bedroom instead of a studio, giving him an authentic raw sound.

Owen began with a self-titled debut album, with an emphasis on recording without a studio, other albums produced with this style include, No Good for No One Now and I Do Perceive. With his fourth album, At Home with Owen, Kinsella began to hybridize producing from his room and producing other elements in a studio. With his 5th album, New Leaves, Kinsella became a family man, evolving his lyrical style. His most current album is The Avalanche, which came out this Summer.

Owen’s reflective lyrical style and straightforward approach to production is a rare, but much-needed quality in music today. Be sure to see Owen live!

MacGregor Salmon: Transfer student from Texas A&M to Loyola University Chicago, I am a Film and Digital Media major. Though my primary study is in film, I love all things creative and want to immerse myself in all kinds of mediums. Sharing and discovering music with others has always been an important part of my relationships with others. I grew up on funk, and the first song I can remember hearing is Sir Duke by Stevie Wonder. I still have much love for funk, but I also lean towards alternative, jazz, and anything experimental as I love to hear how new artists are changing the music scene. I find myself on Soundcloud often, looking for creative new works by independent artists. I also consider myself to be a writer, I love to write creative short stories, but I also want to use my skills as a writer to further my appreciation and understanding of music, and the artists behind their work.
