Vundabar has the rare quality of being able to capture the anxieties of modern life for young people, while not falling too much into a pit of nihilism. Instead, Vundabar expresses our grievances while keeping things light, and reminding us to have fun. Vundabar is an indie rock, post-punk band from Boston. Vundabar was formed by Brandon Hagen, Drew McDonald, and Grayson Kirtland in 2012 while they were still in high school. The band was well-received by audiences in France and gained them attention from French Promoters. This allowed them the opportunity to go on a European tour, while not being restricted by being signed to a record deal in the States.
Vundabar released their first album in 2013 called Antics, which was created using elements from a garage band, it was an instant hit with audiences and kickstarted their music career. In 2015, they released their sophomore album, Gawk which refined their already well-crafted music, to be more meticulous in its themes and its post-punk sounds, covering themes of identity, emotional isolation, and loneliness. In 2018, they released their album, Smell Smoke which discusses the dilemma of young American’s relationship with the economy and the struggles of the American dream. Their most current album is titled Either Light which came out this year.
Vundabar has the quality of having unabashed creativity and freedom woven into every lyric and chord. Be sure to hear their sound live.
