Video Age @ The Empty Bottle (2/25)

Taking the bubbly synth-pop sounds of the 80s, and using modern technology to apply a crisp fresh sound to its idiosyncratic style, Video Age seeks to bring back an enthusiastic feel. Video Age was started by duo Ross Farbe and Ray Micarelli, and have added new members to the band to contribute to the creative process. Video Age aims to fight against cynicism and elate a feeling of potential and positivity, they feel heavily influenced by 80s music because of it’s happy energetic tone. The duo began making music on a drum machine and ended up using 80s musical blips and bops, which ended up being their signature style.

Video Age is based in New Orleans and the founders met through music circles in Loyola University’s music industry program. They released their first album, Living Alone, in 2016 which features plenty of guitar along with the synth. Their second album released 2018, Pop Therapy really begins to delve into the 80s pop sound thas so recognizable; the album aims to act as a kind of optimistic therapy for listeners. Their newest album released this year, Pleasure Line, focuses on turning pain into pleasure, and the need to create in moments of stillness.

These days, optimism is direly needed in an age of nihilism, and Video Age aims to fight the good fight against cynicism. Be sure to hear the application of their music live.

MacGregor Salmon: Transfer student from Texas A&M to Loyola University Chicago, I am a Film and Digital Media major. Though my primary study is in film, I love all things creative and want to immerse myself in all kinds of mediums. Sharing and discovering music with others has always been an important part of my relationships with others. I grew up on funk, and the first song I can remember hearing is Sir Duke by Stevie Wonder. I still have much love for funk, but I also lean towards alternative, jazz, and anything experimental as I love to hear how new artists are changing the music scene. I find myself on Soundcloud often, looking for creative new works by independent artists. I also consider myself to be a writer, I love to write creative short stories, but I also want to use my skills as a writer to further my appreciation and understanding of music, and the artists behind their work.
