Beach Fossils and Wild Nothing @ Thalia Hall (12/6)

Both front runners of the lo-fi indie-pop genre, Beach Fossils, and Wild Nothing both have in common a laid back lyrical style and mellow instrumentals that support a focus on poetic storytelling. Beach Fossils is a band from New York City formed in 2009. Formed by lead singer/songwriter Dustin Payseur, their songs detail struggles and relationships from Payseurs life, as well as depicting life in New York City. By touring throughout America, they began gathering fans and released their debut album, Day Dream/Desert Sand. In 2010 they released their self-titled debut album, which has a more optimistic style. In 2013 they released their album, Clash the Truth, broadening their lyrics to be more confessional. After a break, they released their newest album Somersault in 2017.

Wild Nothing was formed by lead singer/songwriter Jack Tatum out of Blackburg, Virginia. He began performing under the name Wild Nothing in 2009 and started gaining attention from peers in the indie-pop circle. His music incorporates hints of synth, post-punk, and dream pop into its lo-fi foundations. He writes and creates his music on his own but performs live with a band. In 2010, the band released its debut album Gemini, receiving acclaim from Pitchfork. Their second album, Nocturne which ranked on Billboard’s Alternative New Artist charts as number 1. Their most recent album, Indigo was released in 2018.

Without a doubt, these bands are sure to complement each other live, as they both were brought up during the indie scene together.

MacGregor Salmon: Transfer student from Texas A&M to Loyola University Chicago, I am a Film and Digital Media major. Though my primary study is in film, I love all things creative and want to immerse myself in all kinds of mediums. Sharing and discovering music with others has always been an important part of my relationships with others. I grew up on funk, and the first song I can remember hearing is Sir Duke by Stevie Wonder. I still have much love for funk, but I also lean towards alternative, jazz, and anything experimental as I love to hear how new artists are changing the music scene. I find myself on Soundcloud often, looking for creative new works by independent artists. I also consider myself to be a writer, I love to write creative short stories, but I also want to use my skills as a writer to further my appreciation and understanding of music, and the artists behind their work.
