King Krule @ The Riviera Theatre (12/2)

English musician Archy Marshall, whose performance name is King Krule, incorporates many derivatives of Jazz, along with punk, darkwave, and rap into his soulful swinging music. King Krule’s vocals seem like somber howls that tend to stick with you even after they are over. Lyrics take poetic and literary influence, like the thoughts of any lonely soul in a big city set to a subtle drum line, the hum of a saxophone, and the glitter of a guitar. King Krule’s ensemble truly does sound like the next modern iteration of jazz, taking inspiration from many sub-genres of jazz while adding new layers and inspiration to further the genre. King Krule also adds visual aesthetics to his work, pairing it with photography, and meticulous works on music videos as well.

King Krule began writing and producing music in secondary school under the name Zoo Kid, making music in a genre he called “Bluewave”, creating a mixtape called U.F.O.W.A.V.E. Soon after he began going by King Krule and released his self titled EP. In 2013 he released his debut album 6 Feet Beneath the Moon which brought him much attention and led him to perform on Conan and The Late Show With David Letterman. In 2015 he released a new album under the name Archy Marshall called A New Place 2 Drown which had more rap/ hip hop influences than his previous work. In February of 2020, he released his newest album Man Alive!

Be moved by King Krule’s melancholy melodies about metropolis life and more, live.

MacGregor Salmon: Transfer student from Texas A&M to Loyola University Chicago, I am a Film and Digital Media major. Though my primary study is in film, I love all things creative and want to immerse myself in all kinds of mediums. Sharing and discovering music with others has always been an important part of my relationships with others. I grew up on funk, and the first song I can remember hearing is Sir Duke by Stevie Wonder. I still have much love for funk, but I also lean towards alternative, jazz, and anything experimental as I love to hear how new artists are changing the music scene. I find myself on Soundcloud often, looking for creative new works by independent artists. I also consider myself to be a writer, I love to write creative short stories, but I also want to use my skills as a writer to further my appreciation and understanding of music, and the artists behind their work.
