The Airborne Toxic Event @ The Vic Theatre (3/11)

In the storm of The Airborne Toxic Event’s intense vocals, and lingering blaring chords lies an injection of serene orchestral music that seems to slow down time. The Airborne Toxic Event has cooperated with the Calder Quartet many times to blend together rock and orchestral symphonies. The lead singer and writer of the band, Mikel Jollet has a background in writing fiction, which lends credence to the name of the band being a reference from Don DeLillo’s novel, White Noise. This background in writing has led The Airborne Toxic event to be highly lyrical, giving Jollet the opportunity to bring his essay on love, pain, and longing to life through compelling musical arrangements.

The Airborne Toxic Event first started gaining public traction with their singles, Does This Mean You Are Moving On? And Sometime Around Midnight with which they did short tours. These tracks became part of their self-titled debut album in 2008, which was lauded as the debut album of the year according to the Boston Herald. Soon followed their next album, All at Once which further showcased the band’s ability to perform songs about subjects personal and political. The band has released 6 albums in total since 2008, all lyrically well crafted. Their most current album is Hollywood Park released this year.

The Airborne Toxic Event provides a sensitive touch to rock through its impactful lyrics and orchestral harmonies. Be sure to see them live next year.

MacGregor Salmon: Transfer student from Texas A&M to Loyola University Chicago, I am a Film and Digital Media major. Though my primary study is in film, I love all things creative and want to immerse myself in all kinds of mediums. Sharing and discovering music with others has always been an important part of my relationships with others. I grew up on funk, and the first song I can remember hearing is Sir Duke by Stevie Wonder. I still have much love for funk, but I also lean towards alternative, jazz, and anything experimental as I love to hear how new artists are changing the music scene. I find myself on Soundcloud often, looking for creative new works by independent artists. I also consider myself to be a writer, I love to write creative short stories, but I also want to use my skills as a writer to further my appreciation and understanding of music, and the artists behind their work.
