Off With Their Heads, Slingshot Dakota, Time Thieves @ The Subterranean (9/26)

Fast-paced, heavy drums, and lyrics shouted at the top of their lungs, Off With Their Heads, Slingshot Dakota, and Time Thieves all mutually agree that loud is king. Minnesota based Off With Their Heads alternates between melodic vocal samples and hardcore head-banging intensity. Off With Their Heads has had a large alternating line-up of members, keeping things fresh with each member’s own stylistic approach. Slingshot Dakota is a duet featuring Carly Commando and Tom Patterson. Commando puts a unique spin on the keyboard, layering notes that could sound like guitar riffs with popping notes, while Patterson keeps things thunderous on the drums. Time Thieves combines elements of synth, with a punk rock base, and vocals from each of the members of the band.

Off With Their Heads formed in 2002 with their first Ep, Fine Tuning the Bender 7”. After which they released a string of EPs leading up to their debut album, From the Bottom in 2008. Since then they have released 5 more studio albums, and 4 live albums, their latest being Character, which came out this year. Slingshot Dakota released their debut album in 2004, Keener Sighs. Their latest album came out last year, known as Heavy Banding. Time Thieves is quite a new band, releasing their debut album, Space July 3rd this year. The album features their songs Flicker of Light and TWKR.

The three of these bands carry a musical intensity like no other. Be sure to see them perform together live!

MacGregor Salmon: Transfer student from Texas A&M to Loyola University Chicago, I am a Film and Digital Media major. Though my primary study is in film, I love all things creative and want to immerse myself in all kinds of mediums. Sharing and discovering music with others has always been an important part of my relationships with others. I grew up on funk, and the first song I can remember hearing is Sir Duke by Stevie Wonder. I still have much love for funk, but I also lean towards alternative, jazz, and anything experimental as I love to hear how new artists are changing the music scene. I find myself on Soundcloud often, looking for creative new works by independent artists. I also consider myself to be a writer, I love to write creative short stories, but I also want to use my skills as a writer to further my appreciation and understanding of music, and the artists behind their work.
