Passenger @ Thalia Hall (11/5)

Subtle cords, rhythmic vocals, and lyrical storytelling; Passenger takes music back to its bare bones. Michael David Rosenberg performs under the name Passenger, Rosenberg being the lead singer for the band before they broke up. Rosenberg started composing music when he was just 14 years old. After realizing that music is what drives him, he dropped out of school at age 16 to pursue a music career. He began busking, which is street performing, around England and Australia. Now Rosenberg’s unique vocal twang which delivers melancholy limericks is known around the world.

It is almost hard to not know Passenger, as his 2012 single “Let Her Go” blew up, achieving the status of fantastic commercial success, and being a soulful, genuine, love letter to folk, and to anyone dealing with a breakup. With his origins in Busking, Passenger has kept true consistency to his style. He has written 12 albums in total, but his breakout album was All the Little Lights, which featured Let Her Go, and is defined by its acoustic guitar and somber sound. He released Whispers and Whispers II with the title track featuring Ed Sheeran. His latest album, Patchwork came out just last month.

Melancholy, and authentic, Passenger feels like a friend to be vulnerable with. Be sure to hear his talented vocals live.

MacGregor Salmon: Transfer student from Texas A&M to Loyola University Chicago, I am a Film and Digital Media major. Though my primary study is in film, I love all things creative and want to immerse myself in all kinds of mediums. Sharing and discovering music with others has always been an important part of my relationships with others. I grew up on funk, and the first song I can remember hearing is Sir Duke by Stevie Wonder. I still have much love for funk, but I also lean towards alternative, jazz, and anything experimental as I love to hear how new artists are changing the music scene. I find myself on Soundcloud often, looking for creative new works by independent artists. I also consider myself to be a writer, I love to write creative short stories, but I also want to use my skills as a writer to further my appreciation and understanding of music, and the artists behind their work.
