Innovators in the progressive rock scene, Wishbone Ash has a rich history, and has been cited as an inspiration for other well known bands such as Iron Maiden, Van Halen, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Metallica. The band formed in 1969 by bassist and vocalist, Michael Turner. In the search for a lead guitarist, they came to an impasse, where they couldn’t decide between Ted Turner and Andy Powell. It was decided that they would see what it sounds like to have both play guitars. Thus, their famous twin guitar style was created, giving the band a way to innovate their sound. What followed was quick recognition, and world tours. After some members have rotated in and out, they still make music to this day.
From 1969 to 2020 the band has produced 26 studio albums, starting with Wishbone Ash, which launched them into prominence. In 1972, they rose to the top of the UK charts with their third album Argus, which was voted best rock album of the year by Sounds Magazine. Their 4th album Wishbone Four, was produced by themselves, featuring folk elements and acoustic guitar. Other notable albums made in the seventies were There’s the Rub and New England. Their most recent album, Coat of Arms was made this year which after experimentation throughout their five decade expanse of development, takes the sound back to their classic form in the seventies.
Any fan of classic rock should pay their respects to see the roots of some of their favorite bands, as well as see the new works that Wishbone Ash has created this year.
