LA Priest @ The Empty Bottle (11/15)

Samuel Eastgate, former frontman of the English Cult Band, Late of the Pier, headed towards the Welsh wilderness and re-emerged as LA Priest. What followed was LA Priests imaginative psyche-pop style, using unpredictable, and intricate beats as a backdrop to dreamy lyrics. LA Priest produces his music from top to bottom, even spending a year creating his own custom drum machine from scratch to use for his latest album, allowing him to get more intimate with his music than just having something pre-programmed.

Before making his debut album under the name LA Priest, Samuel was involved in a number of projects as a co-producer, such as with Connan Mockasin. After sometime, LA Priest produced his debut album, Inji, featuring direct lyrics, and an innovative sound. His next album GENE co-produced with artist Erol Alkan just this year, was made entirely with his custom drum machine, which the album takes its name sake from. He has also produced a string of singles such as Rubber Sky, Beginning, and What Moves.

If you’re looking for something innovative, different, but grounded, LA Priest is a musician you need to check out, and better yet see live.

MacGregor Salmon: Transfer student from Texas A&M to Loyola University Chicago, I am a Film and Digital Media major. Though my primary study is in film, I love all things creative and want to immerse myself in all kinds of mediums. Sharing and discovering music with others has always been an important part of my relationships with others. I grew up on funk, and the first song I can remember hearing is Sir Duke by Stevie Wonder. I still have much love for funk, but I also lean towards alternative, jazz, and anything experimental as I love to hear how new artists are changing the music scene. I find myself on Soundcloud often, looking for creative new works by independent artists. I also consider myself to be a writer, I love to write creative short stories, but I also want to use my skills as a writer to further my appreciation and understanding of music, and the artists behind their work.
