Prominent indie rock musician Ryan Adams recently made statement addressing the abuse allegations that occurred over year and a half ago, while apologizing for his past behavior. Now, Mandy Moore and Karen Elson, two women how brought forward allegations against Adams, have responded to the apology made in the recent statement.
Adams was accused by numerous women, including a fan who was reportedly underaged at the time of their encounter, of allegedly using his influence among the music community to sexually exploit up-and-coming female musicians. Moore is Adam’s ex-wife, who accused the performer of manipulative behavior, while Elson echoed these claims alongside fellow singer-songwriters Phoebe Bridgers and Liz Phair.
This is the second time that Adams has addressed these allegations; the first time occurred right after they were made public last February, when he called them “upsettingly inaccurate.” While he posted a cryptic statement online last summer, where he spoke of how “the truth matters,” his recent apology was the first time he directly addressed the allegations since last February.
“There are no words to express how bad I feel about the ways I’ve mistreated people throughout my life and career,” Adams wrote. “All I can say is that I’m sorry. It’s that simple. This period of isolation and reflection made me realize that I needed to make significant changes in my life.”
Elson stated that while she believes in redemption, Adams has not apologized to her in private since 2018 and expressed her disdain at being called a liar by Adams at the time of the incident. She explained that this incident left her disillusioned with the music industry as a result of her experiences with Adams.
“I believe in redemption and amends even for him,” Elson explained in a Tweet before her account went private. “However he has not reached out to me since 2018 to apologize for his terrible behavior. In fact back then he called a liar which added more pain and made me disillusioned with the entire music industry.”
The artist also responded to screenshot taken by Ryan’s fans, where she stated that she enjoyed her tour alongside Adams. Elson explained that while there was a lot of toxicity behind the scenes, Adams’ band and the crew were very pleasant to her during their last show, which she referred to in the post.
“His team and band were so kind to me it was the last show so I expressed my gratitude,” she explained. “But I also experienced a lot of toxicity behind the scenes and more afterwards. I am willing to forgive if he’s genuine but I’ve seen him do this before. Let’s hope . His actions going forward will dictate the sincerity of his statement and if I’m able to forgive. I‘ve never demanded anyone to boycott his music. I’m just expressing my opinions on my personal experience and mine pales in comparison to others.”
Moore also echoed the statement regarding Adams’ lack of an apology in private during a recent appearance on the Today show. She stated that she doesn’t necessarily want an apology, she just finds it curious that Adams chose to make these statements in an interview without contacting her beforehand.
“Speaking for myself, I’ve not heard from him,” Moore explained. “I’m not looking for an apology necessarily, but l do find it curious that someone would do an interview about it without actually making amends privately.”
While Adams’ most recent record was pulled from release, he made a public appearance alongside Jesse Malin earlier this year.
