Nicolas Jaar Just Live Streamed His New Album Cenizas on Twitch

Electronic music artist Nicolas Jaar has just livestreamed his album Cenizas on Twitch, which was made ahead of its March 27th release date via the record label Other People. This is Jaar’s first record since the release of Sirens back in 2016.

Jaar released the project’s first single “Sunder” earlier this month, which featured a minimalist sound with spacey ambiance, simple synth keys and Jaar’s signature cryptic lyricism backed by his deep vocal delivery.

Cenizas is Spanish for “ashes,” and is set to feature a more abstract and ambient electronic sound, which is a slight departure from his more recent work as the experimental dance project Against All Logic. He released two albums as Against All Logic, with the release of 2012–2017 in 2018 and 2017-2019 earlier this year. The first Against All Logic record featured a more house inspired sound, while its sequel featured a variety of dance music influences.

Sirens took inspirations from a variety of genres such as trip hop, jazz, and various types of popular and experimental electronica, as Jaar’s deep vocals  and dark lyrics meld in well with its eclectic influences. The album’s lyrics dealt with Jaar’s complex history as a person of Chilean descent, who’s parents fled the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet, a dictator who was put into power through a US-backed military coup back in 1973.

“I’ve had these sort of weird relationships with where I’m from. Just this kind of fucked up soup of CIA, Chile, and how now some parts of Santiago look like Miami. All of that is weirdly embedded in my own history,” Jaar explained in an interview with the Fader.
