Album Review: Poolside – Low Season

A 70s disco dance-inspired album

The latest album from Los Angeles based band Poolside is exactly that; an album that should be listened to by a pool with the sun shining down, melting all worries away. Since 2010, Poolside has created new-age disco dance music for the masses. Along with the release of three studio albums to date, the band has toured and played major music festivals like Coachella and Outside Lands.

Low Season, though not their longest, is eight tracks of pure bliss from start to finish. The album starts off with opener “Abandoned Tunnel,” a complex yet simplistic track at the same time with the help of a sultry saxophone. “I Feel High” follows and doesn’t disappoint. The track is not only alive and fun from the tropical beats but it becomes very reminiscent of ’70s pop disco. One of the standouts of the album is the band’s second single released, “Around The Sun.” A simple rock ballad paired with beautiful vocal melodies that allows the emotions of getting older really shine through, “another year around the sun/ guess I’ve just been havin’ fun/ just another year around the sun/ making it through.” Next on the album is “Losing Control.” This track finds itself to be the slowest of the songs on the album and makes for the perfect build-up of anticipation.

The next song on Low Season, “Kinda Lovely,” plays like a classic summer love ballad. With the help from Sydney based electronic band Panama, the track oozes with synthy beats and a funky bass line. The album ends with “Sunrise Strategies,” a seven-minute instrumental journey. Acoustic guitars, electric guitar, synths, flute and saxophone all find themselves coming together to bring the album to a close. When the seven-minute mark comes, one final note is faded out over a period of time to linger in the listener’s mind.

An album perfect for relaxing beachside or studying for the next big exam, Low Season is a simple but enjoyable play from start to finish and should leave every listener with a smile on their face.
