Album Review: Oh Wonder – No One Else Can Wear Your Crown

Intimate and entrancing from start to finish

The London based alt-pop duo, Oh Wonder, finds themselves making their third studio album a testament to trying something new. Anthony West and Josephine Vander Gucht have been known to create personal music for the soul. By vibing synthpop and alternative, the band’s self-titled debut album was an instant hit. Now, the duo is in the sweet spot with their third studio album, No One Else Can Wear Your Crown, to cast their musical reel into the great unknown and see who or what bites.

The 10 track album opens with “Dust,” a reminder to the listeners that amid the chaos in the world, we are all still humans searching for a purpose. A song littered with sweet nothings mixed throughout sonic waves. “Happy” comes next as a beautiful testament to letting people go and being happy for their happiness. With lyrics like, “you’re holding someone close/ should hurt somehow it don’t/ I guess that’s how I know/ I’ve finally let you go” and “I never thought I’d be happy to see you with somebody else,” the duo makes a powerful statement through pop powered grooves that are sure to find its way to radio soon.

No One Else Can Wear Your Crown twists and turns with tracks like “How It Goes,” a bluesy, saxophone and piano match made in heaven, and “Nothing But You,” an R&B electronic dream. The album ends with “Nebraska,” a relaxing and truly lovely look down memory lane and the seven-year relationship the duo have created with one another, “climbed many mountains, traveled the skies/ I’ve been to heaven, oh, how I’ve tried/ to get you out my mind, but you’re still home.”

The entrancing duo of Oh Wonder took No One Else Can Wear Your Crown and paved a path to explore just what that phrase means to them. Whether it be love, loss or empowerment, the band’s album jumps from highs to lows and back again for a truly enjoyable listen from start to finish.
