Kirk Windstein’s Dream in Motion comes alive
Coming in hot off on an almost 30-year run with the band Crowbar is sludge rocker Kirk Windstein with his solo debut album Dream in Motion. Windstein also a member of the band Down who just announced some reunion shows kicking off June 18 in Dessel, Belgium.
Windstein brings in a different sound than the usually high tempo, high energy of his past bands, but still incorporates all the swampy metal sounds he does so well. With steady melodies throughout the album, his throaty voice shines through in this self-made album. Being the mastermind behind all of the vocals, guitar and bass on the album, Windstein’s dark but powerful sounds have a way of being deep, but not too emotional at the same time. The album’s low-key tempos accompanied by Weinstein’s melodic range take people on a journey from soft, to smoky to deep and extremely throaty at times.
Songs like “Enemy In Disguise” showcase the immense amount of buildup that Windstein puts into the album. The rest of the album is carried along with mostly slow riffs, heavy drumbeats and the soul of the singer, with a lot of intention behind what he had produced.
Windstein also talks in his interview with revolvemag.com about how his lyrics sometimes are unintentionally deep. He even got help from his wife on a couple of songs, like “Toxic.” The tempo also starts to pick up in that song, about halfway through the album. This is when his sludge-rock background really starts to shine and more sounds like the ones from “Crowbar” start to come through.
Windstein closes out the solo album with a cover of the 1917 hit “Aqualung” made famous by Jethro Tulls. Rather than just making a cliché solo album, like doing something acoustic, Windstein produced something original to him that strays away from his other groups. With lots of soul, thought and intention behind Dream In Motion. He truly shows fans why he has been coined a grunge rock god, with thirty plus years’ experience to back it up.
