Several prominent music artists from across multiple genres have been inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame for this year. The artists who will be inducted include pop star Mariah Carey, Motown legends The Isley Brothers, synth pop pioneers Eurythmics, rock musician Steve Miller and the production duo The Neptunes (Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo).
This event was founded in 1969 by songwriter Johnny Mercer and music publisher/songwriter Abe Olman and publisher/executive Howie Richmond. to honor artists throughout popular music history. Since 2019 461 individuals have been inducted into the hall of fame, although the hall does not have a permanent place and unlike the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, is not televised.
The Isley Brothers are the oldest group to be inducted this year, having penned the hit single “Shout” back in 1959. This classic track was featured prominently in many commercials, the film Animal House, and was most famously covered by The Beatles.
Eurythmics are best known for the 1980s smash hit “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This),” a track which served as a monumental moment in the history of synth pop which would dominate throughout the 1980s. The group recently reunited for the first time in five years last December, where they performed their own tracks for the first time in 2008.
The Neptunes have been some of the most prolific producers since the 1990s, having worked with artists such as Clipse, Jay-Z, Brandy and Justin Timberlake. Hugo recently announced that he and Pharrell will be working with The Neptunes full time this year.
