Swamp Dogg and John Prine Duet on New Song “Memories”

Swamp Dogg has released a new song with country singer-songwriter John Prine titled “Memories,” which will be featured on Swamp Dogg’s upcoming album Sorry You Couldn’t Make It. This latest project was produced by Ryan Olson of the synth pop outfit Poliça, and is set to be released on March 6th via Joyful Noise Recordings and Pioneer Works Press.

“Memories” is a blend of soul and country music, with both artists giving vocal performances in their style, which is complimented by a vintage instrumental with an acoustic piano, and bluesy electric guitar. The steady drum beat and bassline are simplistic, however the vocals put an emphasis on the song’s lyrics.

Swamp Dogg is known for his classic off-kilter, satirical and experimental recordings made since the 1970s along with his ventures into soul, funk and disco. The performer was at first skeptical of going into country music due to the fact that it has historically lacked representation from people of color. However, due tot he success of artists such as Darius Rucker and Lil Nas X , the artist received encouragement to go in this direction.

“They didn’t have any blacks in country until Charlie Pride came along,” he says. “But in time, all things change and that’s what has happened to country music.” He went on to explain that “I’m anxious because it’s like I’ve taken all my money and put it on one horse. But I believe in this horse.”

Last month the artist teamed up with Justin Vernon of Bon Iver, Channy Leaneagh of Poliça and Jenny Lewis for the song “Sleeping Without You Is A Dragg.” Check out our review of his 2018 release Love, Loss and Autotune.
