Ever-dynamic singer-songwriter Torres, the stage name of New York-based musician Mackenzie Scott, is gearing up for the release of her new album Silver Tongue at the end of the month. The album, which is the follow-up to her acclaimed third LP Three Futures, an album that saw her change up her a style a bit, to great effect. The latest song from Silver Tongue is “Dressing America,” a song that treads the line between shuffling Americana and glittery new-wave pop.
The video seems to take it’s influences directly from the lyrics of the chorus, during which Scott croons “I tend to sleep with my boots on should I need to gallop over dark water / To you on short notice.” In the video she takes on a variety of personas but the central character finds her dancing in her kitchen wearing a sheer top, what looks like baggie motocross pants and of course, her boots and a cowboy hat.
These scenes of her scooting across the floor are interspersed with those of her walking down snowy streets. Suddenly, the action returns to her dancing in her kitchen – but now, she’s naked sans pasties over her nipples and a pair of black underwear. Later, she’s joined by another woman, presumably her lover, who’s in a similar state of undress. The two dance together, their bodies entertwining, at one moment their faces purely serious and in others looking more playful. The video concludes with Torres carrying the other woman in a blanket, trudging down the street through the snow.
“An ode to every sacrificial act of love,” said video director Ashley Connor. “Starring our hero Cowboy Mackenzie, who will gladly carry any lover through the snow. A few friends made the video during the December squall.”
Torres was dropped by her label 4AD after the release of Three Futures, with the reasoning that she was not commercially successful enough. Luckily for us, Torres landed on her feet and signed a deal with similarly influential indie label Merge for her fourth album Silver Tongue.
