New Music Collective Humanist Releases New Song “Shock Collar” with Dave Gahan and Announces Album Featuring Mark Lanegan, Members of Ride and Unkle

Music collective project, Humanist, released their new song “Shock Collar,” featuring Dave Gahan, lead singer of electronic band Depeche Mode, on Jan. 13. Simultaneous to the release of the single, Humanist also announced their self-titled album, which will feature Mark Lanegan.

“Shock Collar” is defined by faded guitar riff, followed by an energetic drumbeat. Gahan’s effortless powerfull voice enhances the strumming of the guitars, transforming the song to replicate what a dream-like state would sound like.

“It was a pleasure to be a part of Rob’s Humanist project,” Gahan said. “Mark Lanegan asked me, and I liked the idea immediately. It’s a beast!”

Humanist was originally formed by Rob Marshall, guitarist for Exit Calm, after watching The Living Room, a documentary about the singer Gavin Clark. After watching the film, Marshall learned that Clark passed, away, which sparked Marshall to write an album of songs on the topic of mortality. In doing so, Marshall contacted a list of singers, asking them to write their own melody and lyrics with a track title and music.

“I can sing a little, and I do sing on some of the tracks, and I’ve written some of the singing parts too, but I’ve always preferred the art of collaboration,” said Marshall. “I guess that’s from being in bands your whole life.”

In regard to Marshall mentioning his keenness toward the art of collaboration, he also co-wrote Lanegan’s last two albums, Gargoyle and Somebody’s Knocking. Both albums were highly praised for the new and unique sounds introduced on the two albums.

Along with Mark Lanegan and Dave Gahan, the upcoming album will be featuring Madman Butterfly, Cark Hancock Rux, John Robb, Joel Cadbury, Mark Gardener, IIse Maria, Ron Sexsmith and Jim Jones. The album consists of 15 tracks, featuring a different singer for almost every track.

The Humanist self-titled album is set to release on Feb. 21, 2020, via Ignition Records. Currently, there has been no word on a tour for the promotion of the upcoming album.
