Post-rock band Caspian have diverged a bit from their usual sound on their latest track “Circles on Circles,” from their upcoming album On Circles, which will be released on January 24 via Triple Crown records. This is the band’s first new album in five years, following-up from their 2015 release Dust and Disquiet.
“Circles on Circles” is a softer acoustic track that blends in elements of hymnal vocal overlays and soft ambient sounds. The band’s co-founder and guitar player Philip Jamieson performs somber vocals on this track, which discusses his feelings of isolation and depression.
“I can’t say that taking pen to paper and opening up my voice for the first time in 15 years was the moment of total catharsis that I was looking for when writing this song during a bout of isolation and especially rough depression over the holidays of 2018,” Jamieson explained in a press release. “I did discover however that the decision to keep going anyways and move through the swirling circles of gray is more often than not a softer, more gentle and ultimately tender acknowledgment than I was always led to believe.”
The band is typically known for their post-rock/post-metal sound which is usually louder and more experimental than this latest release. Jamieson believed that this was the right sound however, and stated, “What we did musically for this song is an ode to that realization and felt like the appropriate closing statement for a record that tried its hardest to cover a familiar spectrum of emotions, including endings, which can be gentle too.”
