Alternative R&B/hip hop star Lizzo has announced that she will be quitting Twitter on the platform, claiming that there were “too many trolls.” The performer, who is known for her hit singles such as “Good as Hell,” and “Truth Hurts,” indicated that she may return to the platform in the future, although it is unknown how long her absence will last.
“Yeah I can’t do this Twitter shit no more.. too many trolls,” Lizzo tweeted. “I’ll be back when I feel like it.”
The performer has been known to make Tweets which have landed her in some troubles in the past. Last year, she was sued by a Post Mates delivery person after she made several tweets claiming that the person had stolen her food. Despite these Tweets however, the performer has always focused on celebrating body positivity and inclusivity during her music and performances.
Some people on Twitter have responded to Lizzo’s Tweets with fat jokes, and other statements that insults the performer’s body as a response to her Tweet. One tweet stated “no dont we need to drop you on iran rq,” likening the performer to a bomb that could potentially be dropped on Iran, due to her weight.
“I’ve always had to turn haters into congratulators,” she told Billboard in September 2019 interview. “That’s the thing with my songs and my live shows: I’ve never lost that mentality of ‘I have to win you over,’ and I’m never going to, because I didn’t learn that way. I have muscle memory in this.”
Lizzo premiered her third album (and major label debut) Cuz I Love You last year. This project was supported by the single “Tempo,” featuring Miss Elliott and “Juice.” She will be performing at this year’s Bonnaroo.
