Influential 1990s indie rock band Archers of Loaf recently announced that they will be touring this year, which will mark their first live appearances in nine years. The band has followed up this tour with another big announcement; they will be releasing their first new pieces of music in over two decades this year.
Archers of Loaf released their most recent studio album White Trash Heroes back in 1998, which saw a re-release on Merge Records back in 2012. The band broke-up after this record, however they briefly reunited back in 2011 for an unannounced set at The Cat’s Cradle in Carrboro, North Carolina, followed by a brief tour, which was supporting the band’s reissued projects on Merge records.
Eric Bachmann, Archers of Loaf’s frontman, stated during this 2011 tour that while his feelings regarding the band had changed, he was open to creating more music with the group, as long as they moved their sound forward. The band formed in Chapel Hill, North Carolina back in 1991, and saw immediate indie success with their debut album Icky Mettle in 1993.
“The worst thing [Archers of Loaf] could do is force something out and have it be a bad version of something we already did. It’s going to have to be a forward step. I don’t want to recreate the 25-year-old kid writing the songs that I would do now with those three other guys, so we’d have to think that through,” Bachmann said in an interview with Spinner back in 2011. ” They’re very good to work with, in that way. It’s not out of the question, because everyone thinks the same way. No one wants to do ‘Icky Mettle 2.'”
