New Years resolutions usually promote a positive change that commence at the top of the year and those were the same sentiments that were felt by West Coast rapper YG. Within minutes of ringing in the new year, Compton native YG (born Keenon Daequan Ray Jackson) decided to kick bad habits to better himself in a form of an apology, via his official Twitter page. In a moment of self reflection, YG tweeted “it’s been brought to my attention that my old views on life was ignorant. i apologize to the LGBTQ kommunity for ever komin across like i was anything but respectful and accepting. Live. Love. Ya Life. Gang!”
Many people championed YG’s formal apology, yet there were still some that either questioned the validity of the apology or want to see his words be put into action. According to Billboard, “Many users quickly thanked YG for putting his tweet out, saying that his outward apology showed growth. Some skeptics said that they wanted to see a change in his behavior before they could accept his apology. Some other users commented that YG’s change of heart may have been spurred on by his public relationship last year with R&B star Kehlani, who openly identifies as bisexual.”
YG’s latest musical offering was his fourth studio album release 2019’s 4Real 4Real, via YG’s own imprint 4Hunnid/Def Jam Recordings, the full length studio album follow up to 2018’s Stay Dangerous. The aforementioned musical projects were released nearly 9 months a part from each other. It seems like YG is readily emboldened to speak on array of topics from gang culture, the untimely demise of YG’s close friend the late fellow West Coast emcee Nipsey Hussle and as of 2020 apologizing for his past insensitive views in regards to the LGBTQ community.
