It appears that Trent Reznor was not pleased over the use of his and Atticus Ross’ soundtrack for the 2018 Netflix film Bird Box, according recent interview with Revolver. The performer placed the blame of a film editor with “bad taste,” and an unsatisfactory mix of their music, and called the process a “fucking waste of time.”
In addition to his criticism of Bird Box, Reznor revealed that he and Ross have dropped out scoring the new Amy Adams film The Woman in the Window. Reznor cited the studio’s “transformation,” of the film after test screenings as the main reason of their departure.
“When we got immersed in it, it felt like some people were phoning it in…. And you’re stuck with a film editor who had real bad taste. That’s kind of our barricade to getting stuff in the film. And the final icing on the shit cake was we were on tour when they mixed it. And they mixed the music so low, you couldn’t hear it anyway. So it was like, that was a …” Reznor explained regarding bird box, before adding, “That was a fucking waste of time. Then we thought, no one’s going to see this fucking movie. And, of course, it’s the hugest movie ever in Netflix.”
Reznor explained that while the music for the latter film was completed, that neither he nor Ross held “animosity” toward the film creators. “There’s no animosity on our end. It’s frustrating when you did that much work and it’s gone. And we were proud—and they were proud—of the movie that it was,” he explained.
The duo of Reznor and Ross released three separate volumes of soundtrack releases for the HBO Series Watchmen earlier this year.
