Sad13, the solo project of Sadie Dupuis of Speedy Ortiz has debuted a new Christmas-oriented, bedroom-pop styled tack titled “121212,” on Christmas day. This is Dupuis’ first new bit of music for the project, following her cover release of The Dandy Warhols’ “We Used To Be Friends,” which served as the main theme song for the show Veronica Mars.
The new track features an array of unique lo-fi instrumentation, with a variety of synth sounds, some which imitate different Christmas melodies throughout the track, a steady electric bassline and a light snare and cymbal line as the track’s backing rhythm. “121212” recalls a relationship which has faded away, as Dupuis discusses drinking alcohol to cope with her loneliness, and recall holiday nostalgia.
Dupuis laments in the lyrics ”
“This is just like every December, sipping back a cold breath/Remembering you in your winter hat, scrimshaw in the quilted flaps/ What a child, anointing my tenderness/Fluid on the lung, kitty catch your tongue/ I could be the one who walks home.”
Her cover of “We Used To Be Friends,” was done on Dupuis’ birthday, as it was a celebration of one of her favorite shows. She also made a short video with the cover, which made many references to the show. “It’s my birthday so you’re legally obligated to enjoy this song & video cover of my favorite opening credits sequence,” she wrote in a Tweet.
