Kanye West and his Sunday Service Choir have debuted new album on Christmas day titled Jesus is Born, a follow-up from his album Jesus is King, which was released earlier in the year. This latest project features two covers, including a new rendition of West’s own “Ultralight Beam,” originally featured on his 2016 album The Life of Pablo and “Balm In Gilead,” a traditional gospel song.
West announced that Jesus is King Part 2 was “coming soon,” earlier this year, in caption on Instagram, which saw the rapper standing beside famed hip hop producer Dr. Dre, who has been one of West’s icons since his adolescence. Jesus is Born follows a similar “gospel-rap,” inspired sound, that began with Jesus is King, and follows West’s recent announcement that he will only be performing gospel music from now on.
The performer held a New York City Performance for his second opera Mary on December 22nd. Mary originally debuted at the Miami Marine Stadium, as part of Art Basel Miami, where West and his crew donned themselves in metallic-silver paint from head to toe for the entirety of the show. During the performance, West and his Sunday Service Choir reworked some of his classic hits such as “Devil in a New Dress,” “Love Lockdown” and “Power.”
His first opera, Nebuchadnezzar, made its debut at the Hollywood Bowl back in November. The show starred rapper Sheck Wes, best known for his 2018 song “Mo Bamba,” and featured an interpolation of the track “Wolves,” and reworkings of tracks such as “Say You Will,” “Our King” and “Wash Us In The Blood.”
