Influential rock band The Flaming Lips have announced a set of 2019 tour dates, which will begin in Spokane, Washington at the Fox Theatre, before wrapping up at The Warfield in San Francisco, California. According to a press release, this tour “will cover music from The Lips entire catalog which means, expect the unexpected.”
The band debuted their latest album King’s Mouth earlier this year, which has captured the band’s unique experimental style with focus on colorful space-inspired themes and sounds. This project was supported by the single “Giant Baby,” which was in turn promoted with a colorful music video exploring their eclectic themes.
As mxdwn reviewer Rene Cobar explained:
“The Flaming Lips have orchestrated an album that summons all the artistic brilliance of their past and reminds us why their act has remained innovative for decades. All previous follies aside, The Flaming Lips will go down in history as a group unconcerned with the world around them, not in a malicious way but in a spiritually free manner. Their songs about giant babies, pink robots and fallen queens capture the imagination and push it to its limits—what else can be asked of music?”
Earlier this year, The Flaming Lips performed their seminal 1999 album The Soft Bulletin in its entirety at Desert Daze, which saw performances from Stereolab, Wand, Animal Collective and DIIV. In addition to this performance, the band performed at Riot Fest alongside artists such as Bikini Kill and Slayer.
UPDATE (1/29): The Flaming Lips have added two new shows to their Spring 2020 tour dates. These aren’t your regular ‘Lips shows (though what shows are, really?) – these will be “orchestrated” shows performed along with a local symphony. The two cities these shows will take place in are Portland, OR followed by Dallas, TX.
