Sharon Van Etten and Norah Jones Perform “Seventeen” on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert

Singer-songwriter Sharon Van Etten was joined by acclaimed jazz pianist Norah Jones for a performance of Van Etten’s song titled “Seventeen,” on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. This track was originally featured on Van Etten’s latest studio album release Remind Me Tomorrow, which debuted back in January.

This live performance of “Seventeen,” was a more restrained performance, with slower tempos, with a more country/blues feel to the instrumental, as opposed to the song’s original more upbeat sound. Van Etten and Jones perform a heartfelt duet, with each delivering passionate vocals, giving a special emphasis and a somber dimension to the track’s lyrics.

Van Etten released a short film titled Departure earlier this year, which featured clip of the two artists performing this track. This song was included on our list of our top 50 songs of the year. Reviewer Alessandro Gueli explained “Sharon Van Etten grounds herself on ‘Seventeen,’ moving between a stoic vocal sentiment and a euphoric melody. Get your ears on this one if you haven’t already, trust us.”

Van Etten’s latest album release was noted for highlighting her vocals, on top of instrumentals that provoked an array of heartfelt emotions. “After listening from start to finish, it could be argued that the album has a much stronger finish than it did a beginning. The slower vibe fits much better at the end of the album as a way of tying everything up,” mxdwn reviewer Jaime Hampton explained. “‘Stay’ does a great job of indicating the album is over while leaving the listener satisfied with what they just listened to.”
