R. Kelly has plead not guilty to bribery charge after being accused of seeking a fake I.D. for the late Aaliyah, who was only 15 when the couple allegedly married back in 1994. Kelly was accused of bribing a government official to obtain a fake I.D. for the singer, who passed away in 2001.
Prosecutors in Brooklyn had already indicted Kelly on several charges including racketeering, kidnapping and sexual exploitation of a child, prior to the bribery charge. This new charge was added onto the performer’s racketeering charges which were made earlier this year. Steve Greenberg, Kelly’s attorney, claimed that Kelly had “no idea,” that the singer was a minor at their time of their alleged marriage.
Kelly is currently facing a slew of charges across three different states: New York, Illinois and Minnesota. He is facing 13 charges in Chicago, Illinois where he is accused of sexually abusing minors and conspiring to obstruct justice, 11 charges in Cook County, Illinois, and further child prostitution charges in Hennepin County, Minnesota.
Kelly has faced numerous accusations of sexual assault and abuse which go back over two decades, which were the subject of the recent lifetime documentary Surviving R. Kelly. Following the release of the documentary, Kelly began facing a slew of criminal investigations regarding these allegations.
Earlier this year a Patreon account set up by R. Kelly’s girlfriend Jocelyn Savage was shut down. “After multiple unsuccessful attempts to verify the identity of the account holder, we closed the Patreon page allegedly associated with Joycelyn Savage due to potential impersonation,” a Patreon spokesperson explained. “All patrons who signed up for the membership page were refunded and the creator did not receive any funds.”
