mxdwn PREMIERE: Light FM Put a Bright-Colored Spin on Recovery with New Video for “Horrible Friend”

Today we’re premiering a great new song from the band Light FM called “Horrible Friend.” Despite the song’s title and the subject matter, it’s a brilliant piece of laid-back psych-pop with lilting acoustic guitars in the chorus and a droning, tremelo guitar lines blending with twinkling arpeggios in the chorus.

“I wrote ‘Horrible Friend’ shortly after getting sober,” said Josiah Mazzaschi of Light FM. “It’s been the best thing that I’ve done for myself and for the people that I love. Part of getting sober was making a list of all the people I had harmed through my drinking and making an amends to those people. Its hard work! I had a lot of feelings and decided to channel them through this song.”

The video is shot around Echo Park in Los Angeles and then ends in a cemetery. There are views of the park’s iconic lotus, structures and views of the surrounding hillsides and the colorful visual effects further adds to psychedelic tones of the track. The video was co-directed, filmed and edited by Zoey Taylor and Lauren Rocket.

“When Josiah sent us the song ‘Horrible Friend,’ it was like we (co-directors Zoey Taylor and Lauren Rocket) knew exactly how to approach the video from the moment we heard it,” said Rocket. “The song itself is so cinematic, almost with a French ‘Amelie’-ish feel, but more twisted and dark. The concept was, I suppose, the mirror has two faces. We have a ‘friend’ who is horrible, so is that really a friend? What does this horrible friend do during the day, and what did this friend do to be so terrible? Does she know she’s horrible? It was super fun to create a character who was the horrible friend and envision a day in her life, and what she does while no one is looking.”
