Phoebe Bridgers Debuts Cover of “7 O’Clock News/ Silent Night” Featuring Fiona Apple and Matt Berninger

Christmas is still two weeks away, but Phoebe Bridgers’ Christmas gift is swift-footed. The California-based folk-rock singer shared a Christmas cover of Simon & Garfunkel’s “7 O’Clock News/Silent Night,” featuring Fiona Apple and The National frontman Matt Berninger. Check out the music below.

The 1966 classic folk song is everyone’s hypnotherapeutic song on Christmas Eve. Bridgers’ rendition comes laden with a dreamy, languid and private conversation with her listeners, creating an intimate connection in between. With Apple’s joint vocals and Berninger’s “newscaster” role, the singer interprets a “Silent Night” from her political and societal meandering mind.

“Happy Holidays to everyone whose family has been literally or figuratively torn apart by Donald Trump,” Bridgers wrote a short note about the cover. “And to my racist, xenophobic, misogynistic, hypocritical family members, fuck you. Thanks Fiona, Matt, Simon, and Garfunkel.”

Bridgers and Berninger previously collaborated in Berninger’s first solo single, “Walking On A String,” released on Dead Oceans in October. The duo also made a guest appearance on the Netflix film, Between Two Ferns: The Movie.

Before “7 O’Clock News/Silent Night,” Bridgers released two other covers of holiday songs, 2017’s “Have Yourself Merry Little Christmas” and 2018’s “Christmas Song” in 2018. Check out Bridgers’ international tour dates in 2020 below.
