mxdwn PREMIERE: Adam Masterson Revisits Old Stomping Grounds in New Video for “Avenue Walk”

British singer-songwriter Adam Masterson’s brand of no-frills rock ‘n roll is hard to come by these days. He’ll soon be releasing a new EP called Delayed Fuse and it features musicians like bassist Charlie Jones (Goldfrapp, Robert Plant) and more. Today we’re premiering the video for “Avenue Walk,” which is from Masterson’s upcoming EP. It’s a very personal clip shot by his wife Anna Gabriel, following the singer as he walks around his old neighborhood in London.

“I used to live on Clarendon Road,” said Masterson. “At one end was Ladbroke Grove and at the other Holland Park Avenue. I used to walk around those streets at night working on songs. If I ever got stuck on a song I found that going out for a walk would help me find my flow.”

As he walks through his old neighborhood singing in the video, he occasionally runs into old friends. The whole idea for the video came about very spontaneously.

“Anna and I were just planning on getting ideas for a video when the two of us went back to my old stomping ground and she shot me walking around on her iPhone as a test,” he said. “However, after looking at the footage we both felt it had such a relaxed and natural feel that we should use that footage and cut a video together. I bumped in to some old friends while walking around and Anna kept shooting so there were some very real moments of myself in my old neighbourhood.”

The song has a somber mood, taking an introspective tone. The acoustic guitars that lead its instrumentation are gently strummed while Masterson’s vocals exude charismatic worldliness, not unlike The Boss himself, Bruce Springsteen.

“It sounds like the person in the song has found themselves at a loose end, so I tried to write about what that feels like,” said Masterson. “The verses are about what’s happening in the world outside and the choruses are about what’s happening in the world inside. We all have a dream self I guess that’s what I was trying to evoke.”

Delayed Fuse has been a long time coming for Masterson, having its roots in a chance meeting with James Hallawell back in 2014. The two began to work together soon after on what would become Delayed Fuse, in Masterson’s old neighborhood, allowing him to marry his British roots and his newer influences from living in America.

“The EP has been paired down from an album that has two different producers that I’ve worked with, Sean Genockey and James Hallawell,” he said. “The stuff with Sean is more guitar driven with a Rock feel and the stuff with James has that too but it’s a wider ensemble of musicians that bring in some country and Rock ‘n Roll elements too. It all has a pretty live feel.”

Masterson will be performing songs from the new album at his next gigs. You can catch him December 15th at Lola In NYC and December 21st at Dublin Castle in London.
