Watch Kanye West Cover Himself In Silver Paint & Perform Older Songs with a Gospel Reworking During His Second Opera Mary

This past weekend, Kanye West performed some of his classic songs in a seasonal-themed, opera performance, according to NME. this is West’s second opera since the release of Nebuchadnezzar, which was released to mixed critical reviews.

The opera took place on a boat in Miami, as West and his crew told their version of the nativity story through Sunday Service takes of his own songs, including “Devil in a new Dress,” “Love Lockdown,” “Power,” and other of West’s older songs. Perhaps the most shocking development in the opera was the appearance of West and his performers; West and his crew dawned themselves in metallic-silver paint from head to toe for the entirety of the show, aside from a few of West’s choir members, and one of West’s performers portraying the Virgin Mary. After the release of West’s latest album JESUS IS KING, some fans were shocked to see Kanye fully abandon the secular thematic elements that have previously dominated his music. However, West’s decision to fully embrace religion will perhaps allow him to continue to make unique music for the next coming years. Regardless, there is no denying West’s commitment to spread the word of the Lord, and make music that people will undoubtedly be drawn to in the process.

Drew Feinerman: I have just completed my senior at the University of Michigan majoring in international studies with an emphasis in political economics and development, with a minor in Chinese language and culture, and I have recently been accepted into the Berklee School of Music's masters of music business program. Although my academic interests include economics, political science, and history, I consider music to be my one true passion. Music is, and has always been, a driving force for the way I think and act every day of my life. I have been playing the tenor saxophone since the age of ten, and playing an instrument at a high level has allowed me to only further my understanding and appreciation for music. While I grew up listening to predominantly classic rock, I soon found myself gravitating toward jazz, hip-hop, funk, and other genres, as my learned to both play and analyze music as a listener. As a writer, I am able to apply my skills both as a musician and a listener, and look forward to the opportunity to being able to express my thoughts on various stories in the music industry.
