Pussy Riot Take Aim At Anti-Abortion Laws In New Video For “Hangerz” Featuring Vic Mensa and Junglepussy

Pussy Riot have debuted a new lyric video entitled “Hangerz,” featuring Vic Mensa and Junglepussy, which takes aim at anti-abortion legislation. The music video begins with the caption “Fundamentalist abortion bans are about hijacking control and ownership of women’s bodies,” before going into the song’s lyrics.

The instrumentals blend in a bit of hard hitting bass and drums, on top of Pussy Riot’s eerie vocals and abrasive sounds, giving it a bit of an industrial hip hop inspired sound, complimented by the rap lyrics and singing. The main chorus states “My body does not need advice from a priest,” reiterating the band’s pro-choice message.

“Don’t like abortions? Don’t make it,” band member Nadya Tolokonnikova explained. “Don’t tell me what to do, my body is nobody’s business. It’s a universal basic right of every human – to decide what do we do with our own bodies. Don’t like abortions? Promote reproductive rights and join Planned Parenthood’s effort in educating people on how to take good care of their reproductive health and to protect themselves from unwanted pregnancies.”

Earlier this year the band announced a series of 2020 tour dates, with the proceeds going in support of local planned parenthood affiliates. The organization provides many family planning services for their communities, often at a lower cost than many other organizations.

“Abortion bans never work, throughout the history we see that abortion bans cause only a growth of illegal procedures that often lead to severe pain and serious damage to health women’s health, including death, ” Tolokonnikova continued. “Stop banning and punishing me. Treat me as truly equal. Talk to me. Listen to me. Help me when I need it. Planned Parenthood and their affiliates are places where women can receive real support, and we, the women of Pussy Riot, cherish these unique safe places dearly. And we’re seriously dedicated to continuously support them.”

The band debuted the single “1937,” earlier this year.
