mxdwn PREMIERE: Kate Simko Announces Original Score for We Believe In Dinosaurs and Shares Ethereal New Track “Heart of Kentucky”

We Believe in Dinosaurs is a documentary telling the story of the building of a $120 million recreation of Noah’s Ark in Kentucky. It’s a gripping documentary in the vein of Jesus Camp, telling its tale through the perspective of three Kentuckians. DJ, electronic music producer and London Electronic Orchestra leader Kate Simko composed the original score for the film, which will be out digitally on Dec. 13 and can be pre-ordered today. To celebrate the news, we’re premiering the opening track of the score, an ethereal composition called “Heart of Kentucky.”

“‘Heart of Kentucky’ is the music in the opening titles sequence, as well as my initial demo scene,” said Simko. “These three minutes are the closest thing to my sonic interpretation of the film.
There’s an underlying feeling of tension, but that’s contrasted with beauty, mystery, and the precision of science.”

The ark that these Kentuckians built was intended to disprove the theory of evolution. The film’s title We Believe in Dinosaurs comes from a line in the film in which a man states that the creationists believe in dinosaurs, just not in the sense that most people do: They believe dinosaurs lived alongside humans, he states as he shows off a fossil that “was created during Noah’s flood.”

The original score for We Believe in Dinosaurs is being released by Lakeshore Records. In the making of the score, Simko worked closely with the film’s director, Clayton Brown.

“We Believe in Dinosaurs is a film about creationism, conflicting ideologies, and America’s troubled relationship with science,” said Simko. “The score uses analog synthesizers, like the Moog Voyager, to symbolize modern science and technology, alongside delicate synth tones, strings, and live violin to underscore the sometimes heated emotions the film. We are living in a highly polarized moment in American politics and culture. This is a soundtrack to these times—exciting and fast-paced, yet challenging and conflicted. If you haven’t seen the film, I hope the music still reflects this underlying feeling.”
