The day after Thanksgiving Day, Furnace Fest announced its 2020 return on November 29, calling off its 17-year pause in the music festival scene. Furnace Fest previously has revealed its first performing artist, American post-hardcore band Beloved. More names recently have been added to the lineup for Furnace Fest 2020, which is held at the Sloss Furnaces in Birmingham, AL from September 18-20.
According to Theprp, Boysetsfire, Few Left Standing and Evergreen Terrace are the three additional forces of the growing lineup. Hardcore band Boysetsfire decided to hang it up in 2006 and reunited in 2010 after brief break. The band recently released their seventh studio album While a Nation Sleeps in November. Last year, the five-piece American metalcore band, Evergreen Terrace, hinted that their new album is on the way, tweeting “A record is written. You might hate it.” Performing in Furnace Fest 2020 will bring more attention to the band and keep their fans’ ears open to the upcoming album. While the weekend of September 19 in 2020 will be a musical celebration of rock and roll, it also reunites two popular bands of the late ’90s and early ’00s. Christian metal band Few Left Standing disbanded in 2002; the upcoming performance in Furnace Fest 2020 marks their first return in 17 years. Billed as a punk, hardcore and metal music event, Furnace Fest is held annually during August at Sloss Furnaces, a National Historic Landmark in Birmingham, from 2000 – 2003. Hosted by Takehold Records, Furnace Fest 2003 assembled a plethora of artists, including Finch, Taking Back Sunday, Rise Against, Avenged Sevenfold, Minus the Bear, Mae, Armor for Sleep, From First to Last, As I Lay Dying, Copeland, Silverstein, Further Seems Forever, Stretch Arm Strong, Mastodon, Hatebreed, Every Time I Die, Andrew W.K., Norma Jean and others. The festival also highlighted a reunion show from Hum, an alternative band who are best known for their 1995 radio hit “Stars.”
UPDATE (12/11): Fans of melodic metalcore are going to be pretty excited to hear about the new additions to the return of Furnace Fest. Added to the lineup are two of the most groundbreaking artists in the genre, Shai Hulud and Hopesfall. The two bands were known for their abilities to seamlessly merge brutal metalcore with melodic and experimental passages, avoiding the cliche sing/scream song-structure of latter bands in the genre.
Shai Hulud also famously boasted co-founder of pop-punk hitmakers New Found Glory Chad Gilbert in their lineup. According to The PRP, Jay Pepito will sing for Shai Hulud, a band that has had significant lineup turnover throughout the years. Also added to the lineup is Alabama punk/metal band Haste and Solid State mainstays August Burns Red.
UPDATE (1/8): Furnace Fest rings in the new year by announcing several additional artists to its 2020 lineup. The PRP reports that recent additions to the festival include ’68 – a band formed by former The Chariot frontman Josh Scogin, two of New England’s most influential experimental hardcore bands Converge and Cave In, metalcore pioneers Misery Signals and Norma Jean and metalcore revivalists Knocked Loose, highly underrated emo-pop band Glasseater, influential Christian metal band Living Sacrifice, Florida punk mainstays Hot Water Music, Better Off, SeeYouSpaceCowboy, Life In Your Way, Luxury, noodly emo-punk band The Beautiful Mistake, post-rock-y punk band The Casket Lottery, NWBHM/hardcore amalgamators Unearth, With Honor, and one of the biggest names in Christian metal (even bigger than Living Sacrifice), Zao.
UPDATE (1/15): Yet another update for Furnace Fest, bringing on three more bands. From Autumn To Ashes, the dual-singer metalcore band, will be at the festival for their first show in several years. Joining them will be Midwestern emo icons Mineral, ERRA and Unwed Sailor round out the update.
UPDATE (1/31): Furnace Festival just keeps getting better, this time announcing a another addition to its 2020 comeback lineup. Joining the festival are metalcore bands Every Time I Die and Eighteen Visions, straight ahead hardcore group Comeback Kid, RVA hardcore band Avail, everyone’s favorite positive-mindset rocker Andrew W.K., emo band The Juliana Theory, experimental rock/post-hardcore band The Appleseed Cast and Astronoid.
UPDATE (2/6): Another week, another big addition to Furnace Festival, which is shaping up to be a who’s-who of heavy music. This time additions include Stretch Arm Strong, Open Hand, Bad Cop / Bad Cop, Counterparts, Defeater, End, Gideon, Varials, Terminal, Holy+Gold, The Darling Fire, All Get Out, Forever Starts Today, The Judas Cradle, Love is Red and Bloodjin.
UPDATE (2/20): Furnace Fest is back at it, adding even more metalcore legends to its 2020 lineup. This round is highlighted by the addition of Poison the Well, who have recently been playing shows for their 20th anniversary, but have made it clear there’s no plan for new music from the groundbreaking band. They’ll be playing their album The Opposite of December at the festival. Another band playing one of their best albums is Showbread, who’ll be performing No Sir, Nihilism Is Not Practical, while As Friends Rust and former singer for Sunny Day Real Estate Jeremy Enigk is the final new addition to the festival this time around.
