The Jack White founded Third Man Records has launched a new quarterly print magazine called Maggot Brain, edited by veteran Detroit music journalist Mike McGonigal. Avant-garde jazz legend Alice Coltrane graces the cover, while the magazine includes pieces about Daniel Johnston and the classic J Dilla album Donuts. Their first issue is a seasonal one, covering the winter months of December, January and February.
McGonigal originally published several zines including Chemical Imbalance from 1984 to 1994 and Yeti from 2000 to 2013. He has also written extensive biographies on artists such as Galaxie 500 and shoegaze pioneers My Bloody Valentine. His reporting and criticism have also appeared in numerous publications such as Pitchfork, SPIN, the Village Voice and Artforum.
According to a statement obtained by Billboard, this magazine will include content regarding the worlds of art, music and literature and will also feature unpublished archival content. They also released a statement indicating fans to not “ask us where our website is.”
“And yes, you get it, we love print but we do not merely live in the past surrounded by the moldy old, really,” the statement explained. “We mean, fantagraphics is still publishing new issues of Love & Rockets, plus there is so much new stuff… We’re not luddites, but. Just please don’t ask us where our website is.”
