Grimes Debuts Ferocious Synth-Pop Track “My Name Is Dark”

Grimes has released her new synth-pop track “My Name is Dark.” The new song was written, produced, performed, and engineered by Grimes, with Pitchfork confirming it. The track also serves as the fourth single released from her forthcoming album Miss Anthropocene set to be released on February 21, 2020. She has previously released “We Appreciate Power” (featuring HANA), “So Heavy I Fell Through the Earth,” and “Violence” (featuring i_o).  The album will include six new additional tracks and follows her critically acclaimed high-fidelity ranked album Art Angels, released in 2015.

Since its release, she released “Venus Fly” with Janelle Monae and was featured on the Suicide Squad soundtrack with new song titled “Medieval Warfare.”  Grimes then featured on Janelle Monae’s song “Pynk” off of her Grammy-nominated album Dirty Computer released in 2018. Earlier this year, the singer collaborated with Bring Me The Horizon on an electronica track called  “nihilist blues.” Earlier this month, she got into some hot water after claiming  that Artificial intelligence (AI) will lead to live music being obsolete and  suggesting that humanity is at the end of “human art.”

Zola Jesus responded back to the comments tweeting that her statements lacked nuance, and “they were coming from someone who has nothing to lose, or doesn’t need to readily interact with possible negative outcomes.”

UPDATE (12/3): Grimes has shared a lyric video for her new song “My Name Is Dark,” partially to clear up confusion over the relatively unintelligible lyrics of the song (which is pretty par for the course for a Grimes song). The notes of the Youtube video state “”I noticed the lyrics on Genius are insane so I made this over the weekend. DEF not an official vid or anything close. this song is kinda grey blue purple not hyper saturated, but I was in Tokyo jet lagged and vibing in hotel room. so mostly just a vibe collage.”
