R&B star The Weeknd has dropped a new single entitled “Heartless,” a slight return to form to The Trilogy mixtapes which defined his early career. This latest single follows up from a a teaser track entitled “Blinding Lights,” which premiered in a Mercedes Benz commercial earlier this year.
“Heartless,” has a spacious, yet brooding instrumental with open synth sounds, vocal effects, along with pounding bass and drum lines that give the track a dark feel, which compliment its introspective lyrics. The Weeknd brings his signature blend of singing/rapping throughout his vocal delivery, as he discusses the struggles of fame and the debauchery he engages in.
“Blinding Lights,” takes on a more electronic pop inspired feel with bright synths, upbeat drums, complimented by The Weeknd’s soothing vocal delivery for the teaser. This teaser appeared in an advertisement fort the latest version of the Mercedes Benz EQC, with the company announcing a short film release by the artist on November 29th on their YouTube channel.
LAst year The Weeknd debuted a new mixtape entitled My Dear Melancholy, ahead of his 2018 appearance at Coachella. This mixtape recalled his earlier mixtape works as well, which helped launch the performer into superstardom, and came after the singer’s highly publicized split with Selena Gomez.
“The Weeknd originally introduced himself as drug-addled and depressed, but his following major-label hits, combined with his very public personal presence, skewed his image a bit more mainstream. My Dear Melancholy, proves that he’s still as dark and brooding as ever,” mxdwn reviewer Chloe Jordan explained.”The gossip-worthy lyrics are sure to please his pop fans and the heavy-hitting production has juiced up his sound, but he’s still the same sad Abel. “
