Nearly twenty years removed for the Y2K countdown we get a different kind of countdown: experimental rock band Faith No More’s newly released countdown currently ticking on the band’s website. Speculation has been rampant that the group will be announcing comeback once the clock hits zero at 11 pm PST on November 26th. Blabbermouth reports that the band was last seen reunited in 2009 shortly after the release of its studio set Album Of The Year and of course followed the album with the well-known record Sol Invictus. While the band has had sporadic periods of activity, a new record has not been produced and fans have eagerly paid attention to each tease the band has made, this new one being the most emphatic and cheeky too.
Sol Invictus was mxdwn’s 2015 Album of the Year for good reason. The record was seeping with the band’s daring blend of funk metal and classic alternative rock showcased in the overdriven basslines of charging tracks like “Superhero” which from one moment to the next change from feral to evocative displays of skill. The band’s large appeal and willingness to take risks are prime reasons to justify countdown: people, not just fans, are curious about what comes next from the group. To lead vocalist Mike Patton it is all business as usual as he stated in a 2017 interview on Full Metal Jackie’s radio show, “It’s one of those things. It’s kind of like going to a family reunion, and you get along with your uncle, and then you’re, like, ‘Oh, we’re gonna go to the next barbecue. Okay. Fine,'”
The clock is ticking away even as this is written, and it is no stretch to say that whatever occurs on November the 26th will be more exciting than Y2K and as explosive (in musical terms) as what the Doomsday Clock predicts, and Faith No More would really not have it any other way.
