Bon Iver have dropped their first music video in seven years entitled “Naeem,” which is directed by AG Rojas, who directed videos for Gil Scott Heron and LA rapper Earl Sweatshirt. The track is featured on the band’s latest album i,i, which debuted earlier this year.
“Naeem,” is shot in a crisp, yet surreal style, taking place near Highland Park in North East Los Angeles, showing various people as they interact with a surreal stone levitating in the middle of a street. During the beginning of the video, a man steps out of a truck and lays down a body in front of the stone at night. The scene then cuts to the night, where a woman is shown exiting her vehicle, before nearly touching the stone, causing it to open as moss and life to grow around it. The woman then returns to her vehicle after coming in contact with water emanating from the stone, and brings her child to the surreal object.
“‘Naeem’ is concerned with the potential for intergenerational healing, and how we choose to engage with that potential,” Rojas explained. “All my admiration and love to Cynthia Rodriguez and her child Azul who brought this idea to life, and to Bon Iver for amplifying it.”
This is the band’s first video since the release of “Beth/Rest” back in 2012. Their latest album release was noted for its blend of genres, pushing upon the band’s sound that they formed in 22, A Million.
