Georgia based southern rock band Drive-By Truckers have announced a new album entitled The Unraveling, which is set to be released via ATO Records on January 31, 2020. This latest album features a new single entitled “Armageddon’s Back In Town.”
This latest single features blues inspired chords, and progressions, placing their southern rock style at the forefront, which is pushed further by the vocalists delivery. The song’s lyrics discuss disillusionment, and self-doubt, with a myriad of political references, such as “There’ll be no healing from the art of double dealing,” which references Donald Trump’s book, The Art of The Deal.
This latest album follows up from American Band, the group’s most political record which discusses gun violence and racial inequalities in the US. This next album will continue the band’s political message, however deal from an interpersonal standpoint. This new record will be released during another likely tumultuous American election year, highlighting its political themes.
“While a quick glance might imply that we’re picking up where 2016’s American Band album left off, the differences are as telling as the similarities,” band member Patterson Hood explained. “If the last one was a warning shot hinting at a coming storm, this one was written in the wreckage and aftermath. I’ve always said that all of our records are political but I’ve also said that ‘politics is personal’. With that in mind, this album is especially personal.”
The Unraveling was recorded at the Sam Phillips Recording Service in Memphis, Tennessee by engineer Matt Ross-Spang and longtime Drive-By Truckers producer David Barbe. The band will also be set to tour next year as well.
